Heptamethyltrisiloxane, also named 1,1,1,3,5,5,5-heptamethyltrisiloxane, is an important organosilicon intermediate. Its chemical formula is C₇H₂₂O₂Si₃ with a molecular weight of 222.51. It is a colorless transparent liquid with a density of 0.819 g/mL (25°C) and a boiling point of 163.8°C (760 mmHg).

Synthetic routes for heptamethyltrisiloxane mainly include: synthesis via cracking reaction using high hydrogen-containing silicone oil and hexamethyldisiloxane as raw materials with concentrated sulfuric acid as the catalyst; hydrolytic synthesis adopting trimethylchlorosilane and methyldichlorosilane as starting materials. These processes suffer from drawbacks such as complicated separation and purification, large wastewater output and high production costs.

In April 2024, an enterprise obtained a patent titled Synthesis Process of 1,1,1,3,5,5,5-Heptamethyltrisiloxane. This invention synthesizes heptamethyltrisiloxane with hexamethyldisilazane, water and organic amine as main raw materials, featuring simple process and high yield. In March 2025, another patent application named A Preparation Process of Heptamethyltrisiloxane was granted. The technology adopts high hydrogen-containing silicone oil as raw material to produce heptamethyltrisiloxane through equilibration reaction in the presence of end-capping agent and catalyst (active components supported on porous carbon materials). This process enjoys advantages of low purification difficulty and high product purity.

The molecule of heptamethyltrisiloxane contains reactive Si–H bonds, making it the fundamental raw material for manufacturing polyether-modified trisiloxane. As a special structured surfactant, polyether-modified trisiloxane possesses excellent dispersibility and wetting capacity, and is applied in the production of waterborne coatings, adhesives, agrochemicals and other products.

Driven by increasingly mature production technologies and rising demand from downstream sectors, the market scale of heptamethyltrisiloxane keeps expanding.
